at Nigeria's history; we [that is the incompetent ruling class] spend during

contraction [economic downturn/crisis]. That is [simply put] Fiscal
Africa is particularly vulnerable to
climate change. It has been estimated by Greenpeace that over 180 million
people in Sub-Saharan Africa alone could die as a result of climate change by
the end of the century. Other impacts include threats to food production,
particularly in areas with rain-fed agriculture, threats to biodiversity,
rising sea levels and increased droughts.
The government of United

As CODESRIA members and friends are aware, the eruption of
the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in some countries of West
Africa has provoked a major health crisis in the region. Although
the modes of transmission (direct physical contact with bodily fluids emanating
from people who are suffering from the disease) are now well known, and the
international response to the crisis is evolving, it still cannot be said that
EVD has been brought under control and that the crisis will soon be over.
9 March 2014: Live on Emmanuel TV the controversial
Pentecostal “prophet” from Nigeria T.B. Joshua is working a miracle. In front
of the usual audience of thousands of people in his Synagogue Church of All Nations
(SCOAN) of Lagos,
he discovers a young man in the audience – says Joshua – that was sent by Boko
Haram to place a bomb in his church. Mustafa, as his name is called, falls on
the ground and vomits something, while the prophet is over him, pushes him, and
cries to Satan to come out of him. The man gets up, makes it a few meters
towards the exit as if to escape, then falls. Joshua comes close to him and
continues shouting. The scene repeats itself several times for many minutes
until the exhausted man lifts up his hands and says that he feels better, that
Satan left him. “He is free in the name of Jesus”, says the prophet. Loud
contemporary music plays in the background for the event, with a play of lights
of many great reflectors in the room. Quickly, the able assistants of T.B.
Joshua take away the supposed Boko Haram member while the public applauds,
singing praises to God who once again has worked through the “prophet”.

Never have the people had it so bad. Life is gradually grinding to a halt.
Nothing seems to be working any longer. The government, as well as social
infrastructure, seems to be in a comatose state. Hunger, poverty,
infrastructural decay, insecurity and disorder are the prevalent features in
the state. A once virile and robust state has been pulled to its knees by the
greed and avarice of a few persons who parade themselves as leaders of the
state. The governor, Chief Theodore Orji, whose primary responsibility is to
superintend over the affairs of the state and its people, has abandoned the
day-day governance in preference to politics.
